Gilles P in Sydney

2008.03.27   |

Second in our occasional series – the first was Mikey Dread – of classic radio cassette recordings from out the archives…

The year is 1994, it’s January and – skinny white boy, red nose – Gilles Peterson is making his first trip to Australia, to play at the first ever Vibes On A Summers Day at Bondi Pavilion.

Sydney had a few things happening on that tip at that time, and you can hear characters like Paul Carroll (responsible for the mad Funk Inc parties), Trevor Parkee and Simon Caldwell get a name check. Part of that crew was Brize who presented the finely tuned Soul Show on 2RES 89.7fm out of Paddington:

“I met Gilles on Oxford St outside that club that used to be upstairs near Taylor Sq, not Kinsellas… he was outside chatting to some people and I pulled up in my car with a few people inside and leapt out and hassled him a bit to come on the show. I think he agreed more out of shock than anything else.”
